Climbing to the Golan Heights, a strategic area overviewing the Sea of Galilee (Kinneret), bordering with Jordan in the east and Syria in the north, packs a lot of breathtaking views, and hard climbs. Enjoy two of the southern climbs overviewing the Kinneret and the Jordan Valley.

Routedetails

Two steep climbs onto the southern part of the Golan Heights with gorgeous views of the Sea of Galilee (Kinneret).  This ride packs a lot of climbing with some really steep sections.  The road conditions of the climb to Susita (second climb) are not ideal, but still worth the climb.  The ride starts in Zemah (southest point of the Sea of Galilee) in the parking lot of the Mul Kinneret shopping center.  You may use the bathroom at the Aroma coffee shop.  The Golan Heights can be very windy, cold in the winter and hot in the summer.  The recommended seasons are therefore fall or spring but watch for the wind conditions.

Leave the shopping center going north on route 90 (take a right and make a U-turn in the roundbout) and then immediately right onto route 92.  Enjoy your first six kilometers of a flat warm up. Route 92 turns into 98 when you continue straight.

Now you are onto an 8km climb with sections reaching up to 19%.  The wind can make this climb even harder, but you will be able to enjoy some gorgeous views on the way.  Two kilometers into the climb you need to take a sharp left.  Continuing straight would take you to the[ Hamat Gader ](http://hamat-gader.com/en/) hot springs, a great place to relax after your ride completes.  Continue the climb all the way to Kibbutz Mevo Hama. This road has little traffic, and is wide enough for the two lanes, but some of the steep sections may force you to the other lane, so pay attention to cars that may be coming in front of you!  About one kilometer before Mevo Hama the hard part is over.  Continue straight on towards the Afik Junction where you will turn left towards road 789.
 
 You are now into a nice flat /  downhill road, except for a short climb towards the Bnei Yehuda stop.  When you get to the @photo[Bnei Yehuda](6567649) roundabout, take the 3rd exit towards the small shopping center.  There is a great[ Boulangerie and Pizza](https://hanahtom.business.site/) place (closed on Saturdays!)  and a small coffee shop. There are also @poi[bathrooms](13459026) in the shopping center.
 
 Go back to route 789 and start your downhill towards the sea of galilee.  When you get to the bottom (Kursi Junction) take a left, and enjoy riding by the kinneret for about 5 kms.  Past kibbutz Ein Gev, there is a left turn with two big @photo["no entry" signs](6567878).  This is the access road to the@photo[ Susita Archaelogical site](6567876) and the asphalt is not in great condition, with some short gravel sections.  Still, I have done it with a road bicycle, although you may need to get off your bicycle in a couple of sections. Susita, also known as [Hippos](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippos), between the 3rd century BC and the 7th century CE, was the site of a Greco-Roman city, which declined under Muslim rule and was abandoned after an earthquake in 749. Besides the fortified city itself, Hippos controlled two port facilities on the lake and an area of the surrounding countryside. Hippos was part of the Decapolis, or Ten Cities, a region in Roman Jordan, Syria and Israel that were culturally tied more closely to Greece and Rome than to the Semitic ethnoi around.
 
 Once on the top, yo will reach route 98 again and take a right back on your tracks, passing Mevo Hama, and onto a gorgeous downhill towards Hamat Gader again.  The downhill will allow you to enjoy @photo[gorgeous views](6567757).  At the stop sign take a sharp right and you are now into a dowhill and flat road back to the car, passing @photo[some fields](6567628) of the nearby kibbutzim.
 
 Continue straight until yo get to the Mul Kinneret shopping center. Take a left in the roundabout and immediately left into the shopping center.
 
 Once back in your car you may decide to go back to Hamat Gader for a dip into the hot springs, enjoy a meal in Ein Gev by the Kinneret, or any of the restaurants in the area.  You may also enjoy one of the beaches around the Kinneret.  There are many activities in the area to enjoy!
